Anastasia Watson extended her own school record for the discus throw as she won the event at the King's College Monarch Open in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon.
Watson, on her first throw in the final round sent the discus flying for a distance of 40.63 meters (133' 3"), eclipsing her own mark on 39.70 meters set at last year's CACC Championship meet. In winning the event, Watson also set a meet record as well as a stadium record for the discus.
In addition, Watson becomes just the second CACC women's discus thrower since 2014 to eclipse the 40-meter mark, joining two-time CACC Champion Stephanie Bock of Georgian Court university who had three 40+ meter tosses in her career.
The sophomore thrower also competed in the shot put, placing fourth with a throw of 10.67 meters (35' ¼") and tossed the javelin for the first time as a collegian, placing tenth with a throw of 22.56 meters (74')
The Griffins as a team produced a total of 11 top ten finishes and six personal best marks, led by Watson's record breaking discus toss and three top ten finishes.
Freshman sprinter
Solanje James recorded top ten finishes in both the 100 and 200 meter dash events while also getting personal-best times in both contests. James qualified for the finals in the 100 meter event with a personal-best time of 13.73 seconds and finished seventh in the finals with a time of 13.78. In the 200 meter event, James placed ninth with a personal-best time of 28.34.
The middle distance events saw six top ten finishes by Chestnut Hill runners along with two personal-best efforts.Â
Sydney Watts, Rebecca Dalton and
Aubrey Elias took second, third and fourth place in the 1500 meter run with
Lilly Short right behind them in seventh place. Watts finished in 5:23.20, Dalton 5:24.24, Elias 5:27.03 and Short 5:36.83. Elias and Short's times were both personal-best efforts. Watts later placed seventh in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:41.38, followed by Elias in tenth place with a time of 2:44.05
The Griffins' remaining personal best effort came in the javelin throw as freshman
Erin McCarthy tossed the spear 21.52 meters (70' 7") – seven inches further than her previous best. McCarthy was 12
th in the event.
The Monarch Open was the Griffins' final tune-up before the CACC Championship meet which will be held on May 6-7 at Georgian Court University.
