Fairfax, Va. - (5/02/2023) – In the most recent issue of
Diverse; Issues in Higher Education (April 27), four Griffins were included among those selected as
2023 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars.
The
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar Awards were established to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. The award was inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis. Colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
Headlining this year's Chestnut Hill College honorees are women's volleyball player
Henielys Ramos and women's Lacrosse player
Rexney Thenor. Ramos and Thenor were named first team honorees.
Earning Second Team accolades are men's basketball player
Nigel Haughton and football player
Nick Ocampo.
Ramos earned first team all-CACC honors this past season, leading the Griffins to their first CACC tournament since 2012. A health science major with minors in biology and psychology, Ramos is a two-time member of the CACC Volleyball All-Academic Team and was inducted into Chi Alpha Omega, the National Student Athlete honor society in spring of 2022. She is also a member of Sigma Zeta Honor Society and has earned Dean's List and Athletic Academic Honor Roll accolades in every semester as a student-athlete at Chestnut Hill. She was selected to the Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area Volleyball team in December.
Thenor had her best season this past spring with 19 points on eight goals and 11 assists as the Griffins won six games. She had the game winning goal against Felician and had a five-point game in the team's win over Alliance university. A psychology major, Thenor earned the D2 Athletic director's Association (D2ADA) Academic Achievement Award in for 2021-22 and was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Athlete Honor Society last spring. She has also earned Dean's List
A two-time CACC Men's Basketball All-Academic Team honoree, Haughton was named a D2 Athletic Director's Association (D2ADA) Academic Achievement Award winner for 2021-22. He was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Athlete Honor Society in spring of 2022 and has earned Dean's List and CHC Athletic Academic honor roll three times since coming to Chestnut Hill in the fall of 2020 after playing one season at Towson University. This season, the senior guard led the Griffins in rebounds, assists and free throw percentage.
Ocampo earned first Team All-CSFL honors last season as a sophomore and was named to the CSFL all-Academic Team in December. He has earned Dean's List and CHC Athletic Academic honor roll status in each of his first three semesters at Chestnut Hill.
