Spann Scores Second Straight Appearance On CACC Weekly Honor Roll
New Haven, Conn. - (12/23/2019) – Freshman guard Scottie Spann Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.) only averaged 9.5 points per game (PPG) during the Griffins’ 2-1 week that included conference wins over Holy Family University (W, 70-67 on December 18) and the University of the Sciences (USciences) (W, 103-82 on December 21). But his tireless effort on the glass earned him his second straight appearance on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll as he offered his first career double-double, 10 points and 14 rebounds, in the win over the Tigers.
Chestnut Hill College visited National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, Morgan State University for Monday’s (December 16) non-conference tilt. The Bears welcomed the Griffins with a 68.8% (22-of-32) first-half shooting effort that separated them for a 53-26 halftime advantage and an eventual 96-72 win over the Griffins. Leading four Griffins in double figures, sophomore guards James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.) and Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) finished with 15 points apiece. Spann was the fourth Griffin in double figures; he finished with 13 points, six rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal.
Wednesday (December 18) night’s CACC contest came down to the wire and sophomore forward Amir Warrick (Washington, DC) played the role of conqueror for Chestnut Hill College as he knocked down the game-winning three pointer with 1.4 remaining on the clock; 70-67. Holy Family University failed to get a shot off on the following inbound, leaving Sorgenti Arena to resume its jubilation. The victory was the Scarlet and Gold’s first in over a year (W, 59-56 vs. Assumption College on December 15, 2018) and first of the CACC variety since a 79-77 win at Wilmington University on February 13, 2018. The real workhorse was Spann, who corralled a season-high 14 rebounds – the most for any Griffin since 2015 (14; Noel Hightower ’16 vs. Philadelphia University, February 10) – while scoring 10 points and providing an assist.
Flying high after the win over Holy Family University, Chestnut Hill College evened their league record at 2-2 with Saturday’s (December 21) 103-82 triumph over cross-city rival USciences. The Griffins took advantage of strong perimeter shooting performances from freshman guard Conor Regan (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and sophomore guard Juston Bailey (Riverdale, Md.) - who combined to hit 8-of-13 (.615) from three-point range – and a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double from sophomore forward Keyon Butler (Chester, Pa.). In the high-scoring effort, six Griffins scored nine points or more and the Scarlet and Gold shot 50% or better from the field (37-of-65, .569), from three (12-of-24, .500), and from the free throw line (17-of-24; 70.8%) in their second straight league-win of the season. Spann finished the contest with nine points, eight rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
