Women’s Tennis Continues Dominance of CACC Weekly Awards

New Haven, Conn. – (9/18/2012) – The Chestnut Hill College women’s tennis team placed two student-athletes on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Report for the third consecutive week as senior Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) and freshman Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) were recognized, respectively, as the league’s Player and Rookie of the Week. Parapouras and Owens were perfect in a 1-1 week that featured a 9-0 win over Georgian Court University and a 5-4 loss to the three-time league champions, Concordia College (NY).

Competition was fierce at the Chestnut Hill College (4-1, 3-1) tennis courts on Saturday September 15, as the Griffins hosted Concordia College (NY) in CACC play. The Clippers held a 2-1 advantage after doubles plays and in singles play they extended their lead to 5-1, rendering a late Griffin rally futile, 5-4. Parapouras was the only perfect Griffin, scoring wins at number three singles, 6-3, 6-4, and number two doubles with sophomore Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.), 8-5. Owens was victorious at number six singles, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, but took an 8-4 loss with fellow freshman, Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario), at number three doubles.

The Griffins cruised to their third straight CACC victory in Tuesday’s match with today's Georgian Court University. Opening their home court in good showing, the Griffins swept doubles play before dominating singles action for a 9-0 win. Parapouras and Oechsle won number two doubles, 8-2, while the freshman combination Owens and Williams-Mulesa claimed number three doubles by the same final, 8-2. Singles play went even better for the Griffins with Parapouras leading the sweep of individual matches with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number three singles.

The women's tennis team breaks from CACC play to host Merrimack College in a 3:00 p.m. match on Friday, September 21.
