Monaghan’s Hot Bat Draws CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. - (3/31/2015) – Batting .467 (7-for-15) during a 5-3 week for Chestnut Hill College, junior outfielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) recognized on the weekly Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Report with an Honor Roll mention. The hot-hitting transfer made the most of his chances at the plate as he went 4-for-4 with three runs-batted-in (RBI) in the Griffins game-one win over The Lincoln University on March 25.

Adjusting to an ever-changing schedule Chestnut Hill College (12-5, 7-1) traveled to Yaphank, New York, for a Monday meeting with Concordia College at Baseball Heaven. The Clippers spoiled the Griffins perfect CACC league record as the victors in a game-one pitchers' duel, 2-1, while Chestnut Hill College fed off another strong start from junior pitcher Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa.) to earn a split with a 6-3 triumph in game two.

Due to poor field conditions Chestnut Hill College and #19 Millersville University swapped roles in Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader, allowing the Marauders to earn a pair of wins on their home turf. In the opener the Marauders six-run third inning overshadowed a sixth-inning solo home run for senior right fielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.), 7-2, while in game two the Griffins chased the home team to a busy 10-8 final. Monaghan reached on a third-inning fielder’s choice went 1-for-3 with a fifth-inning single to left in the second game.

He caught fire when Chestnut Hill College managed to get 12 innings of baseball in against The Lincoln University on Wednesday. Freshman pitcher Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) went the distance in the opener, striking out seven while spreading five hits and a walk over seven innings of a 6-0 victory. Monaghan was the bat behind the scenes (4-for-4) as he doubled in the first, tripled in the fourth, stole a base, and knocked in three runs with singles in the fifth and sixth innings. Game two was nearly perfect for junior pitcher Casey Kern (Stony Point, N.Y.) who only allowed a second-inning single through the left side in a 3-0, five-inning triumph.

One big inning and another gem from the red-hot Crim gave the Chestnut Hill College baseball team just enough ammunition to leave Caldwell University with a sweep of a tightly contested CACC twin bill on Saturday afternoon. A four-run eighth inning lifted the Griffins to a 6-3 decision in game one, while Crim's second shutout in three starts resulted in a 2-0 triumph in the nightcap. Monaghan was the first Griffin to score in the second game, crossing home on a double down the right field line from senior shortstop Preston Koehler (Bath, Pa.). He singled in that at-bat and again in the ninth inning, scoring his second run of the affair on a bases-loaded beanball.

The baseball team now returns home to Latshaw-McCarthy Field for a critical CACC showdown with Wilmington University, which is off to a 6-0 start in league play and riding a nine-game win streak. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1.
