Kalala and Sutton Score CACC Women’s Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll Recognition
New Haven, Conn. – (8/31/2018) – Sophomore outside hitter Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and senior setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) were recognized on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll. Leading the Griffins to a 1-1 tri-match versus American International College (AIC) and Mercy College on Saturday, September 1, Kalala totaled 20 kills, an ace, 22 digs, and three blocks, while Sutton recorded nine kills, 61 assists, an ace, and 16 digs.
Chestnut Hill College (1-1) struggled to find their rhythm in the first matchup, resulting in a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-13, 25-19) loss to AIC (2-4). Despite the early loss, the Scarlet and Gold avenged themselves against Mercy College, finishing them in the three sets (3-0; 25-11, 25-23, 28-26). The Yellow Jackets went on a 7-0 run, before the Griffins interrupted with their first point. Still, the Scarlet and Gold had trouble finding their groove throughout the set, resulting in a 25-18 final. In the second set, Chestnut Hill College found their footing and ensued in a back-and-forth battle until the very end. A crucial kill from Sutton motivated the Griffins, allowing them to score a 26-24 win. Unfortunately in the next two sets, the Griffin's momentum was not enough to hold off AIC as they lost both sets, 25-13 and 25-19.
In the second contest of the day, Kalala's 11 kills powered Chestnut Hill College to a three-set (W, 3-0; 25-11, 25-23, 28-26) victory over Mercy College (2-4). The Mavericks found it difficult to maintain Chestnut Hill College's tempo, which delivered a quick 25-11 final in the first set. Sophomore defensive specialist Adriana Lopez-Soto (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) went on a five-serve stretch that put Mercy College ahead of the Griffins, 23-22, but kills from junior middle hitter Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) and Kalala gave the Scarlet and Gold the 24-23 edge they needed before ultimately winning the second set, 25-23. In the final period, Mercy College did not go down without a fight, but Chestnut Hill College proved superior as a skilled Sutton kill gave the Griffins a 27-26 edge and inspired the eventual 28-26 final.
Kalala and junior outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) each recorded nine kills against the Yellow Jackets, thanks to 29 assists from Sutton. Sutton added five kills and eight digs to her helpers, while Kalala additionally recorded three digs. In the latter match, Kalala scored 11 kills, while Sutton totaled 32 assists at the point. Kalala also scored and ace and two blocks in addition to leading a quartet of Griffins who reached double digit digs with 19. Sutton added four kills, an ace, and eight digs to her assists.
