Philadelphia, PA – (3/29/2011) – Chestnut Hill College led early in both contests, but Goldey-Beacom College came away with two wins in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, 6-5 and 9-6. The Lightning struck late, scoring four runs in their final two at-bats of game one and answering a six-run Griffin first inning with nine runs on 13 hits in game two.
Each side plated one run in the first inning of the opener, but Chestnut Hill College (3-13, 0-6) separated with three runs in their next two at-bats. Senior right fielder Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) platted a run with a grounder to shortstop in the second inning, 2-1. Two more Griffin runs scored in the third inning, 4-1; the first on a single by freshman second baseman Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, FL) and the second on a ground out by sophomore third baseman Mariah Quattlebaum (Rosamond, CA). Each side added on one more run, 5-2, before, Goldey-Beacom College (10-4, 3-1) scored four runs in their last two at-bats, 6-5. The Lightning wore on sophomore pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ), who allowed five earned runs on ten hits and five walks in the loss (2-6). She struck out two.
The Griffins sought revenge in the second game and did so with a six-run first inning. Burdziak led off the game with a single to left field. A bunt-single from Wilenta and a walk to Mattaliano loaded the bases. Sophomore first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) platted two runs with a double to left field, 2-0, and another run scored on a single from sophomore shortstop Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA), 3-0. A sacrifice fly from junior catcher Gina DeAnnutis (Hammonton, NJ) made it 4-0 and two more runs scored as a result of the Griffins aggressive base running, 6-0. But the lead was not safe, as the Lightning struck for one run in the third inning, 6-1, five runs in the fourth inning, 6-6, and three runs in the fifth inning, 9-6.
The softball team continues their CACC schedule with a trip to Philadelphia University on Thursday, March 31. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
