Devils Slide Past Griffins in CACC Softball

Philadelphia, PA – (4/4/2011) – Late offense powered the University of the Sciences (USciences) to two wins over Chestnut Hill College in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Devils erupted for 12 runs in their final three at-bats of the opener and won it 12-2 in six innings, before scoring three clutch runs in the eighth inning of game two to capture a 4-1 victory. Senior second baseman Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) led the Griffins with five hits while sophomore first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) connected for her third homerun of the season.
 
Chestnut Hill College (3-18, 0-10) got started early with sophomore shortstop Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) platting a run in the Griffins first at-bat of the afternoon, 1-0. The tide changed in the fourth inning, when the University of the Sciences (5-17, 3-5) scored three runs on a homerun from sophomore left fielder Erin Summers (Pitman, NJ), 3-1. The Devils used four hits and two errors to score four more runs in the fifth inning, 7-1, before forcing the Griffins into their final at-bat with five runs in the top of the sixth inning, 12-1. Sophomore third baseman Mariah Quattlebaum (Rosamond, CA), narrowed the final by one run with a single to left field, 12-2.
 
Pitching controlled game two as each pitcher allowed one run through five innings, 1-1. The Griffins run came in the bottom of the fourth inning on Cavallo's third homerun of the season, which also tied Caitlin Rickey's ('08) single-season record from 2007. USciences finally rattled freshman pitcher Brittany DeGarmo (Mt. Holly, NJ) in the top of the sixth inning. USciences loaded the bases with three singles before a two-out double from freshman designated player Janelle Rodriguez (Vineland, NJ) cleared the bags, 4-1. Each side went silently in the seventh inning to conclude the twin bill.
 
The softball team continues CACC play with a 3:00 p.m., home doubleheader against Wilmington University on Wednesday, April 6.
