Griffins Split With Warriors on Senior Day

5/1/2011 2:48:40 PM

Philadelphia, PA – (5/1/2011) – Three hits from sophomore first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) and a strong pitching performance from freshman pitcher Brittany DeGarmo (Mt. Holly, NJ) guided Chestnut Hill College to a 9-2 win in game two and earned the Griffins a split in this morning's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. Nyack College won the opener 7-0. During intermission, the Chestnut Hill College Athletic Department recognized shortstop Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) and catcher Janean Ciancia (Trainer, PA) in a Senior Day celebration.

Acting as the home team due to site relocation, Nyack College (8-34, 6-19) jumped to a six-run lead in the opener with six hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Griffins were unable to recover netting only two hits off freshman pitcher Kia Jelley (Deerfield, MA). Junior catcher Gina DeAnnuntis (Hammonton, NJ) singled in the second inning and sophomore pitcher Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) recorded a base-hit in the Griffins final at-bat.

Game two went the Griffins way. Each side scored two in the first inning, 2-2, but after DeGarmo settled in the contest was all Chestnut Hill College (5-31, 2-22). The Griffins separated with three runs in the second inning, the first, two scoring on a misplayed ball in right field and the third crossing home on a DeAnnuntis liner through the box, 5-2. Cavallo knocked in a run in the fourth inning, 6-2, and three more runs in the sixth inning would be more than enough protection, 9-2. DeGarmo earned the win (2-10), holding the Warriors to two runs on eight hits and a walk. Four Griffins recorded multiple hits in the affair and freshman left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, FL) knocked in two runs with a sixth-inning double.

The softball team will concluded their season and CACC schedule Tuesday, May 3, in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
