Madison, N.J. – (2/18/2013) – This evening, the Chestnut Hill College women's tennis team traveled to Drew University for their first competition of the spring. The Griffins picked up where they left off in the fall as they improved their record to 12-4 with a 9-0 victory over the Rangers. The Griffins swept doubles play thanks to a dramatic victory in the second flight by freshmen duo,
Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) and
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario), before securing the win with sensational singles play.
Owens and Williams-Mulesa completed a doubles sweep for Chestnut Hill College (12-4), who grabbed a quick 2-0 advantage thanks to doubles wins at number one, 8-1, and number three doubles, 8-4. The freshmen duo came through with a 5-0 tiebreaker to take the second doubles flight 9-8 (5-0). Seniors,
Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) won number one doubles, while a combination for senior
Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) and junior
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) took number three doubles.
Shcherbakova and Dennis led off the Griffins singles lineup, recording victories of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively. The Griffins dominated the Rangers in the remainder of individual matches as they sealed the 9-0 sweep with wins of 6-0, 6-0 at number three, four, and five singles, before Knott took the final individual flight with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The women's tennis teams travels next to Tampa Bay, Florida, where they will face Florida Institute of Technology in the first of two matches at Hillsborough Community College's Tampa Tennis Center. Opening serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23.
