Queens, N.Y. – (3/30/2013) – A second Griffin has achieved the 100-win plateau in unfortunate defeat this season as senior
Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) secured her personal milestone with fellow 100-match winner senior
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) at her side in an 8-4 victory at number one doubles. Queens College was the victor in both ends of the highly competitive Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional matchup. The Knights defeated Chestnut Hill College 6-3 on the men's side while their #37 nationally ranked women's side edged out Shcherbakova and the Griffin women, 5-4.
The Chestnut Hill College men (11-5) carried a 2-1 lead into singles play, but it was Queens College (7-2) that won the match, 6-3, by dominating individual play. Junior
Yoann Pham (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) and sophomore
Steven Say (Cannes, France) took number one singles 8-4 while sophomore
Michael Humes (Medford, N.J.) and
Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) combined for an 8-2 win at number three doubles, 2-0. The Knights barely avoided a sweep in the team round by earning a 9-8 (9-7) win at number two doubles, 2-1. The only Griffin to find success in singles was freshman
Kevin Taylor (Burlington, N.J.), who claimed the sixth individual flight in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
The Chestnut Hill College women (16-8) echoed the men's early success with a 2-1 lead in doubles play. Shcherbakova and Dennis won the milestone match in the top team flight, 8-4, while junior
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) produced the other Griffins doubles point with an 8-2 win at number two doubles. The Knight broke up the shutout with an 8-2 win at number two doubles. Unfortunately, Dennis and Parapouras were the only Griffins to win an individual match. Dennis took number two singles 1-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Parapouras won number three singles 6-3, 6-3.
The women's tennis team plays next at Millersville University in 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8 while the men resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Tuesday, April 2, with a 3:00 p.m. match at the University of the Sciences.
