Bronxville, N.Y. – (9/17/2013) – For the first time the since joining the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) in 2009, the #37 Concordia College women's tennis team tasted defeat. Chestnut Hill College and Head Coach
Albert Stroble were the culprits, taking this afternoon's league match by a 5-4 final. For Stroble, the victory was the 100
th of his career as a collegiate women's tennis coach.
Wins at number two doubles, 8-4, and number three doubles, 8-6, gave #50 Chestnut Hill College (2-0, 2-0) the early 2-1 advantage. They carried their energy to singles play where individual wins in the third, fifth, and sixth flights sealed the win. In the opening round of team play, senior
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) were the first to score for the Griffins, 8-4 at number two doubles. Sophomore
Hayley Craskey (Aston, Pa.) and junior
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) followed with an 8-6 win at number three doubles. In singles play, Concordia College (2-1, 2-1) managed to tie the match at 3-3 with wins at number one singles, 6-4, 6-0, and number two singles, 6-2, 6-1, but the stalemate was short lived as Oechsle and freshman
Marie Deleval (Grimuad, France) clinched Stroble's milestone victory with enduring wins at number five, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and number three singles, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4, respectively.
Coach Stroble collected 30 wins as the head women's tennis coach at CACC rival, Holy Family University before taking over the Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis programs in late 2006. Over the past seven seasons, Stroble has transformed the Griffins women's tennis program into a premier National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) DII competitor. Most recently, the Griffins earned consecutive trips to the NCAA DII Championship Tournament, 2011 and 2012, while ranking as high as #4 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Rankings and #50 in the ITA DII National Rankings (6/4/2013).
The women's tennis team returns to campus for their 2013-2014 home opener on Friday, September 20, when they join the men's team in hosting simultaneous 2:00 p.m. matches against Merrimack College.
