The game was slow to start, but as Chestnut Hill College (6-5, 4-3) pulled away for a 7-1 halftime advantage, an 11-3 third-quarter edge, and an eventual 14-6 victory, the yellow flags continued to fly at the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Football Stadium. Sophomore attack
George Markey (Branchburg, N.J.) and Melnychenko gave the Griffins a 2-0 first-quarter lead and UDC (3-7, 2-5) scored the first goal of the second quarter, 2-1 (14:01), before three consecutive goals from Winkelspecht spurred a 5-0 Griffin run to halftime, 7-1. UDC got more involved in the second half, but the second effort would not be enough in an eight-goal home victory.
Senior attack Chase Fraser (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore midfielder Luke Gillespie (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) led the Firebird effort. Fraser recorded two goals, three ground balls, six face-off wins (6-of-10, .600), and two caused turnovers while Gillespie offered two goals, an assist, seven ground balls, three face-off wins (3-of-10, .300), and five caused turnovers with the long pole. In goal, junior Tom Yancheski (Phoenix, Md.) made 16, grabbed two ground balls, and caused three turnovers in the loss (3-7).
Winkelspecht and Melnychenko both finished with four points; Winkelspecht recorded his with four goals, while Melnychenko grabbed three ground balls and caused two turnovers in addition to his two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder
