Sanders Sensational As Griffins Earn First Win at Caldwell College

Box Score Verona, N.J. - (4/2/2014) – Fueled by freshman midfielder Lea Sanders (North Merrick, N.Y.), Chestnut Hill College used a 9-2 halftime advantage to secure their first victory of the season in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) fashion; 16-6 over Caldwell College. Sanders scored the Griffins first two tallies and later added four more in addition to providing an assist, four ground balls, four draws, and two caused turnovers against the Cougars.
 
Sanders struck first, unassisted, just 28 seconds after the opening draw, 1-0 at 29:32, and again on a free position shot at 27:36, 2-0. Senior defender KarlaAne Klouda (Belvidere, N.J.) added a third consecutive score for Chestnut Hill College (1-9, 1-3), 3-0 at 18:07, who resumed their string of goals after Caldwell College (0-5, 0-5) recorded their initial tally of the contest with 17:46 remaining in the opening half, 3-1. By halftime the spread reached 9-2 with freshman defender Tizana Hoggs (Columbus. N.J.) and sophomore defender Courtney Weidner (Philadelphia, Pa.) serving as playmakers in the Griffins 6-1 run to halftime. After intermission, the CACC rivals exchanged goals until 9:26, 13-6, when back-to-back scores from freshman midfielder Alicia Herbert (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) sparked the Griffins for a 4-0 closing run.
 
Freshmen midfielders Kirsten Whitt (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Christina Gonzalez (Fairfax, Va.), and Courtney Donlon (East Brunswick, N.J.) each recorded two goals for the Cougars. Whitt served as their top performer with an assist, five ground balls, two draws, and two caused turnovers in addition to her tallies. Freshman goalkeeper Adria Ostafi (Holmdel, N.J.) made 13 saves and grabbed a ground ball in the loss (0-5).
 
In addition to Sanders, six other Griffins recorded at least a goal. Herbert was the best of that group with three goals and an assist while Weidner and freshman midfielder Samantha Herron (Cinnaminson, N.J.) provided significant contributions as well. Weidner added four ground balls and three caused turnovers to her two assists while Herron hauled in eight draws and a ground ball in addition to her three points; two goals and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Katie Joe Lang (Manassas, Va.) totaled 11 saves and a ground ball in her first collegiate win (1-9).
 
The women's lacrosse team continues their CACC schedule at home on Saturday, April 5, when they host Nyack College in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
