Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (11/15/2015) – Chestnut Hill College experienced firsthand the difference a day can make as yesterday's high-paced, high scoring, performance versus the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) gave way to a dismal home shooting performance that left the Griffins behind Franklin Pierce University in a 83-73 final. The Ravens shot 52.9% (18-of-34) from the field for a 44-34 halftime spread that they preserved in the second half behind a reliable afternoon from senior guard Tyler Iacuone (Mahopac, N.Y.), who led the visitors with 22 points.
A tightly played opening ten minutes gave way to a Franklin Pierce University (1-1) run that left a 15-15 (11:16) stalemate at a 32-18 Raven advantage with 6:43 remaining in the first half. Chestnut Hill College (1-1) managed to slow the Ravens down from there with a layup and a three-point basket from freshman guard
Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) serving as the calming factor in a short Griffin reprise that brought the spread to 34-25 with four minutes to go (4:01). Behind the defensive effort of senior captain
Noel Hightower (Easton, Pa.), Griffins whittled the nine-point gap to seven three times within the final minutes of the frame, but a three-pointer from junior guard Matt Banton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) reestablished the visitor's double-digit lead for intermission, 44-34.
Chestnut Hill College could not crack the Raven defense until late in the second half. Midway through the period another Banton three expanded the Franklin Pierce University advantage to 20 points, 64-44 (@ 10:45), before the Griffins chipped away at the deficit, finally forcing it back into single digits, 79-71 (@ 1:04), on a long-range conversion from senior guard
Luke Dickson (Pitman, N.J.) just prior to the final minute of regulation. Unfortunately, a minute was not enough to snare the Ravens, who hit their insurance free throws before a last-second layup from sophomore forward
Edward McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) left the final at 83-73, Ravens.
Iacuone was 7-of-10 (.700) from the field, 3-of-6 (.500) from long range, and a perfect 5-of-5 (1.000) from the free throw line. He added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals to the performance. Joining him in double figures was Banton, who finished with 13 points, sophomore center Mike MeDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) and junior guard Marvilio Berroa (Bronx, N.Y.), who both contributed 11 points apiece. Banton was 3-of-5 (.600) from long range while McDevitt led the Ravens on the glass with seven rebounds.
The Griffins controlled the backboards with a 47-39 rebounding advantage, but a 34.7% (25-of-72) shooting performance from the field and a 53.3% (16-of-30) effort from the charity stripe kept them playing catch-up for most of the affair. Dickson finished with a game-high 24 points, hitting 9-of-18 (.500) from the field and 6-of-12 (.500) from three-point territory, while grabbing three rebounds and handing out three assists. His backcourt partner, sophomore
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.), added 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while McWade served as the third Griffin in double figures with 11 points in addition to three rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Hightower corralled a team-high 11 rebounds.
Chestnut Hill College returns to Sorgenti Arena on Friday, November 20, when they welcome The Lincoln University to campus for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
