11/28/2015 11:07:00 PM

Box Score Washington, DC - (11/28/2015) – For the second time in two weeks Chestnut Hill College found themselves pitted against the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), this time at the UDC Sports Complex in our nation's capital. Senior guard Luke Dickson (Pitman, N.J.) led the Griffins to a narrow 37-36 halftime advantage, but in the end it was freshman guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) who carried the Chestnut Hill College banner against the Firebirds' revenge, scoring a career-high 18 points in a 93-83 loss.

Chestnut Hill College (2-4) looked to their explosive backcourt duo of Dickson and sophomore Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) to get started versus the Firebirds. An Isaac three-point shot delivered the Griffins their first lead of the contest, 5-4, just before the 17-minute mark (17:06). The advantage, however, was short lived as UDC (1-5) took control for a majority of the period, leading by as many as seven points, 18-11 (11:45) and 25-18 (8:37), before the Griffins stole a 37-36 halftime lead on a three-point play from junior forward Gerald Evariste (Philadelphia, Pa.). Behind Awl, the Griffins hung around; he hit 4-of-6 (.667) from the field, including 2-of-3 (.667) from three-point territory to total a team-high ten points in the first half.

The Griffins capitalized on their narrow advantage, expanding the one-point edge to eight points, 46-38, by the 17:30 mark of the second half. But that would be the Griffins largest lead of the affair as UDC stormed back, tying the score at 48-48 just past the 15-minute mark (14:55) before building a double-digit lead, 60-50, midway through the frame (10:55) and pushing it to as many as 14 points, 67-53, with 8:53 left to play. Late in the contest, Chestnut Hill College was able to cut the margin back to single digits, 76-67 (3:10). They cut the deficit to as little as five points, 83-78 (1:06), just before the final minute, but the Firebirds hit their free throws down the stretch, preserving the win and leaving the final spread at 10, 93-83.

Senior guard Erin Senegal (Lafayette, La.) led the Firebirds to their first win of the season with 33 points, six rebounds, three assists, a block, and two assists. He was helped by three others in double figures. Junior forward Jayone Troutman (Chicago, Ill.) led the trio with 19 points, two rebounds, an assist, and three blocks, while junior guard Joseph Nickerson (Newark, N.J.) and senior forward Geran Pope (Washington, DC) each scored a dozen (12 points). Pope added a 12 rebounds, two assists, a block, and two steals to his scoring while Nickerson also recorded four rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal to his offensive production.

Awl finished 7-of-13 (.538) from the field and 2-of-3 (.667) at the free throw line while adding three rebounds and three assists to the performance. Like the Firebirds, three others joined Awl in double figures. Dickson totaled 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Isaac offered 14 points, two rebounds, an assist, and two steals, while senior captain Noel Hightower (Easton, Pa.) scored 10 points in excess of five rebounds, three assists, a block, and five steals.

The Griffins return home to Sorgenti Arena on Wednesday, December 2, to host Georgian Court University in an 8:00 p.m. Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season opener.
