Martines Moves Griffins to 3rd Place With 3,000-meter Run at Blue Hen Classic

Newark, Del. – (4/25/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams performed well in their first competition at the Blue Hens Grant Stadium as the Griffin men finished 3rd of 9 teams at the University of Delaware Classic, with freshman Giancarlo Martines (Cherry, N.J.) earning ten of their 94 points with a 1st place (8:46.51) finish in the men's 3,000-meter run, and the Griffins women placing 7th of 10 teams with 13 points.

Sophomore Courteney Glennan (Sewell, N.J.) scored the first points of the afternoon for the Chestnut Hill College women with her time of 19.70 in the 100-meter hurdles placing her in 4th place (5 points). Five more came in the women's 800-meter run with sophomore Susan Abraham (Staten Island, N.Y.) running 6th (2:53.01, 3 points) and freshman Emily Bensen-Abatangelo (East Meadow, N.Y.) crossing 7th (2:54.39, 2 points). The final three points were earned on Bensen-Abatangelo's 6th place (5:45.68) finish in the women's 1,500-meter run. Glennan also competed in the women's 200-meter dash (11th, 31.12) while sophomore Darby White (Auburn, Pa.) gave her best effort in the shot put (11th, 7.62) and discus (10th, 23.79). The hosting Blue Hens won the women's meet with a point total of 318.50.

Martines' big run came at the end of the day as the men's 3,000-meter served as the meet's concluding event. It would be a climatic end for the Griffins who earned a spot in the team standings for just the third time this season. The Griffins also earned five point in the shot put thanks to the rewarding tosses of freshman Ukunoritse Eyeguokan (Owings Mills, Md.) (6th, 10.21, 3 points) and senior Michael Humes (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) (7th, 9.26, 2 points). Freshman Ediegeo Vanterpool (Clementon, N.J.) earned four more points with his 5th place (4.97) finish in the men's long jump while Eyeguokan added two points in the men's 100-meter dash (7th, 12.43) and four points in the men's 200-meter dash (5th, 25.15). In between, junior Noel Hightower (Easton, Pa.) earned five points with his 4th place (16.01) time in the men's 110-meter hurdle. There were 14 points scored in the men's 400-meter dash with junior Manon Purnell (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Vanterpool placing 2nd (54.92, 8 points) and 3rd (55.03, 6 points), respectively, 11 points in the men's 400-meter hurdle run that saw Hightower run 3rd (59.02, 6 points) and Purnell right behind him in 4th (1:01.34, 5 points), and eight points in the men's 1,500-meter run with a 2nd place (5:07.11) effort. The men's trophy went to Villanova University, who paced the field with 141 points. Sophomore Eric Barton (Colora, Md.) and junior Daniel Repsik (Haddonfield, N.J.) joined Martines in scoring of the men's 3,000-meter run, placing third (9:29.19, 6 points) and 4th (9:59.48, 5 points), respectively. Eyeguokan and sophomore Vraja Podlofsky (Port Royal, Pa.) also represented the Griffins in the final standings of the javelin throw, tossing the needle 27.36 (11th) and 25.03 (12th) meters, respectively. 

The men's and women's track teams conclude their season with the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championships, which are scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, at Georgian Court University.
