Box Score Myrtle Beach, S.C. – (2/27/2016) – A seven-run second inning put Chestnut Hill College in good standing, 7-1, in today's Northeast Challenge clash with Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU). But a rough patch of middle innings knocked sophomore pitcher
Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) from the game and paved the way for a 12-8 Owl victory. Three Griffins brought home two runs apiece while second baseman
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) recorded his multi-hit performance of sophomore season.
SCSU (2-0) got a run in the top of the second inning, but it was quickly over shadowed in Chestnut Hill College's (1-2) end of the frame. An error, a single apiece from senior first baseman
Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) and senior catcher
Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) loaded the bases for sophomore designated hitter
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.). He drew a grinded out the at-bat to draw a walk and plate the Griffins' first run of the inning, 1-1. The next six came across on a single to center field from junior shortstop
Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.), 2-1, a double to left center field from freshman third baseman
Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.), 4-1, a single from junior centerfielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.), 6-1, and a throwing error by the Owl catcher, 7-1. The Griffins tacked another run, 8-1, on in the third inning with a lead-off Campion walk, a beanball, a double steal, and a Baturgil grounder.
Unfortunately, the seven-run deficit was not enough to hold back SCSU, who chipped away with a three-run fourth inning, 8-4, and a three-run fifth inning, 8-7, that chased Sibson from the mound, before a sixth-inning two-out double evened the contest at 8-8. Sibson's relief stemmed the tide, before crumbling in the ninth inning, where the Owls used four hits and two Griffin errors to capture a 12-8 win.
DiBona, Baturgil, and Szmigala each recorded a hit and two runs-batted-in (RBI). Eight Griffins combined for nine hits as Craig was the only member of the Scarlet and Gold to record two hits in the contest. He singled in the first inning and doubled in the ninth.
The baseball team concludes their time at the Ripken Experience tomorrow, Sunday, February 28, with a 12:00 p.m. contest versus Stonehill College.
