Box Score Conshohocken, Pa. - (10/20/2017) – GriffinNation returned to A.A. Garthwaite Stadium in triumphant fashion this evening as Chestnut Hill College scored six times in the first half and limited, the newest member of the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL), Caldwell University to a fleeting fourth-quarter touchdown in a 49-7 final. Sophomore quarterback
Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) needed to throw for only 183 yards to find four touchdowns and he ran for two more, while the Scarlet and Gold defense limited the Cougars to 127 yards of total offense and was headlined by a 10-tackle effort from junior defensive lineman
Brian Layden (Springfield, Pa.) and significant contribution from junior
Kyle Johnson-Hackett (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman defensive back
Anthony Kelly (Perkasie, Pa.).
The first half was all Chestnut Hill College (2-3, 2-3) as Marino needed only one series to warm up before finishing a seven-play drive with a three-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end
Frank Conway (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 8:55 remaining in the first quarter, 7-0. On the second play of the next Griffin drive, Marino hit sophomore wide receiver
Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.) for a 60-yard touchdown pass down the home sideline, 14-0 (6:45). Another stalled Caldwell University (1-4, 1-4) drive led to a 50-yard punt return from sophomore
Ricky Robinson III (Binghamton, N.Y.) that left the ball at the Cougar seven-yard line. Eventually, a 13-yard Marino run pushed the Griffins' first-quarter advantage to 21-0, a point total they duplicated in the second quarter with a one-yard Marino run (28-0, 9:33 2QTR), a 40-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver
Jonathan Barber (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (35-0, 7:00 2QTR), and a one-yard pass to junior wide receiver
Reggie Robinson Jr. (Washington, DC) (42-0, 1:29 2QTR).
The second half was highlighted by a pair of fourth-quarter scores, the first was the Cougars' only score, which came on a three-yard touchdown run from freshman running back Zavion Stevens (Bloomfield, N.J.), 42-7 (14:25 4QTR). The second was a 25-yard Griffins touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback
David Navas (Woodhaven, N.Y.) to sophomore wide receiver
Tyler Clayton (Sewell, N.J.) (49-7, 12:16).
Stevens finished with 22 rushing yards (15 carries, 1.5 yards/carry), but freshman running back Quazier Dailey (Prospect Park, N.J.) led Caldwell University on the ground with 50 yards on 20 carries (2.5 yards/carry). Freshman quarterback Vincet Crisafri (Clark, N.J.) had trouble finding his mark, finishing 3-for-13 (23.1%) with 71 yards and an interception.
Chestnut Hill College's 49 points is the highest since their 48-13 inaugural-game victory over Princeton University (9/19/15). It was a career day for Marino, who was 9-for-15 (60.0%) in his efficient 183-yard performance. Navas was 5-for-8 (62.5%) in the second half and totaled 66 yards. Sophomore running back
Sef Penson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) topped the rushing attack with 45 yards on 12 carries (3.8 yards/carry). Hill caught three passes for 97 yards. Layden, Johnson-Hackett, and Kelly starred on a Scarlet and Gold defense that shut down the league's top rushing offense, limiting the Cougars to just 56 yards.
The Chestnut Hill College sprint football team will travel to Waterbury, Connecticut, next Saturday, October 28, for a 6:00 p.m. CSFL kickoff at Post University.
