Chestnut Hill College Salutes Seniors with 28-3 Win Over Franklin Piece University

Chestnut Hill College Sprint Football Senior Night 2017 (L to R): #72 Shane Pitts, #11 Josean Perez, #21 Kadeem Pankey
Box Score Conshohocken, Pa. - (11/3/2017) – Following a dignified Senior Night ceremony honoring defensive back/wide receiver Kadeem Pankey (Easton, Pa.), defensive lineman Josean Perez (Bethlehem, Pa.), and offensive lineman Shane Pitts (Hawley, Pa.), the Scarlet and Gold brought their 2017 Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) season to a proper close with a defensively inspired 28-3 swansong triumph over Franklin Pierce University. A stingy Chestnut Hill College defense – headlined by junior defensive lineman Brian Layden (Springfield, Pa.) - minimized an early mistake and allowed sophomore quarterback Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) to settle in for a his second four-touchdown passing performance of the season.

Chestnut Hill College (4-3) coughed the ball up at their own 27-yard line on the very first play from scrimmage. But on the ensuing Franklin Pierce University (3-4) possession the Scarlet and Gold defense pushed the Ravens backwards on three straight runs before a punt gave the Griffins the ball back at their own 10-yard line. After a Chestnut Hill College punt Franklin Pierce University offered the first scoring drive of the game, finishing an eight-play drive with a 35-yard field goal, 3-0. The Griffins answered with a first-quarter score of their own, using Marino's arm and legs, and a pair of gashing rushes from junior running back Raevon Floyd-Bennett (Union City, N.J.) to reach the Ravens' two-yard line. That is when Marino found sophomore wide receiver Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.) in the far back corner of the end zone, 7-3. A scoreless second quarter left the spread there for halftime.

After the break, Chestnut Hill College stalled Franklin Pierce University's opening drive and countered it with a 13-play, 66-yard drive that concluded with a Marino touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Jonathan Barber (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 13-3. The Griffin defense intimidated the Ravens on their following possession and the offense punctuated the effort with a nine-play, 90-yard drive that end with 47-yard touchdown pass to Hill and a two-point conversion attempt that was hauled in by sophomore wide receiver Tyler Clayton (Sewell, N.J.), 21-3. For good measure, the Scarlet and Gold scored once more. The last Marino touchdown pass went to Clayton on a 19-yard connection in the southwest end zone, 28-3.

Freshman quarterback Jared Lubas (Salem, Mass.) has some third-quarter success in a 16-of-26 (61.5%) passing performance that totaled 141 yards. Sophomore fullback Kobie Smith (Leominster, Mass.) led the Franklin Pierce University run-game with 48 yards on 22 carries (2.2 yards/carry). Freshman wide receiver Tionne Brown (Turners Falls, Mass.) caught 10 passes for 86 yards. Senior defensive back Ryan Becerra (Tempe, Ariz.) made a team-high 11 tackles.

Marino ends the 2017 season with 11 touchdown passes in three straight Chestnut Hill College victories. He totaled 227 yards on a 15-of-21 (.714) and rushed for another eight yards on three carries (2.7 yards/carry). Floyd-Bennett and sophomore running back Sef Penson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) headlined a Scarlet and Gold running game that totaled 150 yards. Floyd-Bennett carried the ball 11 times for 81 yards (7.4 yards/carry) with a long of 22 yards, while Penson totaled 61 yards on 19 carries (3.2 yards/carry). Hill totaled six catches for 113 yards and his two scores. Layden recorded 11 solo tackles and was in on two others for a total 13 stops. Linebackers, junior Jonathan Baldwin (Hudson, N.H.) (8, 5 solo-3 assist) and sophomore Mike McIlhenney (Philadelphia, Pa.) (7 solo) were active on the defensive front as well with 15 tackles between the two of them. Sophomore kicker Dante Fuchs (Sinking Springs, Pa.) averaged 52.0 yards on kickoffs (5 kicks, 262 yards) and 28.7 yards on punts (3 punts, 86 yards), landing one of his three punts inside the Raven 20-yard line.

Chestnut Hill College finishes their third season in the CSFL with a 4-3 record.
