Isaac Has Historic Night in 98-95 Overtime, CACC Loss at Georgian Court University

Box Score Lakewood, N.J. - (12/30/2017) – Junior guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) sent tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Georgian Court University into overtime with his last-second three point shot (85-85, 0:02). Unfortunately, the Lions pulled out a 98-95 victory with a clutch performance from the free throw line; the home team hit 19-of-25 (.760) from the charity stripe, including 9-of-10 (.900) in the extra frame. Chestnut Hill College was headlined by senior guard Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.), who became the eighth member of the Griffins' 1,000-point club with a season, and career-high 30 points.
 
Chestnut Hill College (1-10, 0-5) trailed for most of the first half, pulling even (34-34) with Georgian Court University (1-11, 1-3) at halftime on an Isaac free throw with seven seconds (0:07) remaining. In addition to scoring seven points in the frame, the Scarlet and Gold captain provided three assists to help senior center Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.) and junior guard Cartier Talford (Reading, Pa.) to nine-point halves. After intermission, Isaac scored his milestone point to earn the Griffins their first lead (42-41, 17:08) since the opening tip. The Chestnut Hill College advantage grew to as many as four points several times and did so for the last time at 55-51 (13:27) as the Lions stole the lead back at 12:29 (56-55) and paced the Griffins to 67-67 (7:36) tie before separating for a 14-point, 84-70 (2:16), lead. In the final two minutes, Talford, Isaac, and Awl took turns playing hero, the last taking a steal the length of the floor with 45 seconds (84-82, 0:45) to go and scoring the game-tying, 85-85 (0:02), three pointer with two seconds left. In overtime, the score remained tight until the final minute. There, an ill-timed foul, a pair of missed shots, and a turnover gave the Lions an insurmountable four-point, 94-90 (0:14), lead.
 
Senior guard Juwuan Carter (Paterson, N.J.) led Georgian Court University with 23 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. The other Lions scored in double figures; among them was sophomore guard Caleb Bowser (Philadelphia, Pa.) (22 points), junior forward Nikola Vujovic (Novi Sad, Serbia) (19), and junior guard Omar Williams (Queens, N.Y.) (17). Sophomore guard Tony Ellington Jr. (Hainesport, N.J.) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the Lions' 40-33 advantage on the glass.

Isaac was 11-of-19 (.579) from the floor and 7-of-8 (.875) from the free throw line in his historical performance. He also recorded two rebounds, seven assists, and a steal. Talford came off the bench for 23 points, four rebounds, an assist, a block, and four steals. Evans offered 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal, while Awl finished with 14 points, three rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
 
The Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team returns to Sorgenti Arena on Wednesday, January 3, when they begin their 2018 schedule with an 8:00 p.m. contest versus Wilmington University.
