Box Score Conshohocken, Pa. - (9/22/2017) – The defending Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) Champions, University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) were next to brave the nest, A.A. Garthwaite Stadium, as Chestnut Hill College held the Quakers to a 6-0 halftime advantage and owned an opportunity to tie the contest late in the third quarter (13-7). Unfortunately, UPenn was able to survive the Scarlet and Gold, taking the CSFL clash by a 20-7 final. The Griffins' third-quarter touchdown was scored on an 81-yard touchdown connection between sophomore quarterback
Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) and sophomore wide receiver
Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.).
It was UPenn (2-0, 2-0) who struck big first, as the visitors recorded a 64-yard touchdown on their very first play from scrimmage; a connection from sophomore quarterback Eddie Jenkins (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior wide receiver Aiden Kelly (Livingston, N.J.) that put the Quakers up 6-0 at 13:23 of the first quarter. Chestnut Hill College (0-1, 0-1) had a good chance to even the spread on the ensuing drive, but a failed third-and-eight forced the Griffins to go for the field goal. That went wide right and gave way to a battle of field position.
UPenn scored on their first possession of the second half as well, the drive included a 12-yard rush by Jenkins and a one-yard touchdown plunge from junior running back Jake Klaus (Haddonfield, N.J.), 13-0 (11:08 3
rd Quarter). Five minutes later (6:29), the Griffins began a three-play drive that began and ended with an 81-yard to Hill. The touchdown reception narrowed the margin to six points, 13-7 (4:48, 3
rd Quarter), and on the ensuing possession, UPenn penalties forced the Quakers to punt from their own six-yard line. With the chance to tie, Chestnut Hill College started the following drive at the UPenn 26-yard line. Unfortunately, the Griffins had penalty problems of their own and were forced to punt at the 37-yard line in an effort to pin the Quakers deep. UPenn used a pair of Klaus rushes and a 43-yard touchdown run from Jenkins to secure a 20-7 lead with 14:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Scarlet and Gold was unable to recover, surrendering the league affair to the visitors.
Jenkins threw for 192 yards (10C-21A-0INT) and rushed for another 117 (3.8 yards-per-carry). Klaus rushed for 89 yards on 23 carries (3.7), while Kelly caught four balls for 111 yards. Freshman linebacker Matt Gorman (Fort Washington, Pa.) led the Quaker defense with eight tackles and a sack.
Marino was 11-of-36 for 162 yards and rushed for another 11. Sophomore running back
Sef Penson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Scarlet and Gold on the ground with 34 yards on seven carries (4.9 yards-per-carry). Hill surpassed his own record for the longest reception in program history (58 yards, 9/19/2015) and bested the longest play from scrimmage in program history (63 yards, 11/6/2015) as well, but sophomore wide receiver
Joe Lee (Horsham, Pa.) led the Griffins in receptions with four (4-33 yards). Junior tackle
Brian Layden (Springfield, Pa.) made a team-high ten tackles and recorded a sack. Sophomore defensive tackle
Marcel Mitchell (Mays Landing, Pa.) recorded six tackles, three came as part of the Griffins seven sacks.
