Box Score 2 Newark, Del. - (9/8/2017) – For the second weekend in a row, the Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team engaged in a quad match event, this time visiting Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival, Wilmington University for their Wildcat Invitational. After a 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22) loss to American International College (AIC), the Griffins faced Merrimack College for the second time this season. The Scarlet and Gold gave the Warriors a tougher time in the rematch, eventually giving way to Merrimack College in a 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-27, 15-11) final.

Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and sophomore outside hitter
Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) headlined the Chestnut Hill College (0-6) effort versus AIC. The Griffins paced the Yellow Jackets at the start of the affair, 12-6, but after a timeout AIC launched an 8-0 run that put them ahead of the Scarlet and Gold, 14-12. Sophomore middle hitter
Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) knotted the set at 16-16 and the Griffins assumed a 20-17 advantage before the Yellow Jackets staged a late rally that ended the frame on a 25-22 final. Chestnut Hill College led early (6-4) in the second set too, but again AIC retaliated, this time tying the Griffins at 8-8 and pacing them to a 25-18 end. In the third set, the Scarlet and Gold finally got on the scoreboard, staging off a late Yellow Jacket rally that was eventually thwarted by their own attack error, 25-23. Unfortunately, AIC controlled the fourth frame, leading by as many as 10 (14-4) points and holding on for a 25-22 victory.
Kalala totaled 13 kills and two digs, while Byxbee recorded nine kills and a pair of aces. Junior setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) supplied 30 assists, a kill, six digs, and a block, while sophomore
Kara Turtzer (La Habra Heights, Calif.) (11 digs) and senior
Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.) (19 digs) combined for 30 digs to headline the Chestnut Hill College defense.
The second match – opposite the Warriors – saw the Griffins grab a 1-0 lead (25-22) before having to force a deciding set with a 27-25 win in the fourth. In a roller coaster frame, Chestnut Hill College led 15-9 and briefly trailed 21-20 until rallying for the victory; Sutton scored two aces and senior right side
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) killed the final two points of the frame. Despite the momentum, the Scarlet and Gold were not able to derail Merrimack College in the fifth set as the Warriors stole a 5-0 edge and paced the Griffins to a 15-11 conclusion.
Gelfan, Callahan, and Kalala each reached double digit kills. The captain totaled 15 kills, two digs, and a block. Callahan offered 12 kills, two digs, and a career-high five blocks while Kalala finished with 10 kills, five digs, and two blocks. Turtzer supplied 11 digs and Reno 24.
The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team continues their docket at the Wildcat Invitational with respective 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. matches versus Franklin Pierce University and Adelphi University.
