Chestnut Hill College Falls Shy Of USciences in Season Finale, 73-70

Chestnut Hill College Senior Day, 1,000-Point Recognition
Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/24/2018) – Chestnut Hill College concluded their 2017-2018 season with yet another close Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest, as the University of the Sciences (USciences) escaped a packed Sorgenti Arena with a 73-70 win. In their swan song performances, seniors, Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.) welcomed the support of junior forward Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.), who hit 6-of-7 (.857) from the field and 6-of-7 (.857) from the free throw line in an 18-point effort that came with six rebounds, an assist, three blocks, and three steals. Evans finished with a team-high 21 points.

USciences (15-12, 11-8) emerged from early competition to lead by 11 points, 37-26 (5:00), heading to the final five minutes of the first half. There, Toplyn, Isaac, and junior guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) took turns answering the Devils and narrowing the margin to six points, 45-39 (0:48) by halftime. The Devils extended their lead over Chestnut Hill College (5-21, 4-15) at the start of the second half, pushing the deficit to double digits, 49-39, at 18:02 and as many as 12 points, 57-45, as late as 14:54. The Griffins responded during the next five minutes, reducing the Devils' position to just four points, 61-57, on an Evans jumper at 10:04. Each side enjoyed one more run before the final horn, unfortunately, the USciences 11-point, 71-60 (5:23), was enough to withstand the Griffins final revival. Eventually, Evans trimmed the Devil lead to a single point, 71-70 (1:07), on a high-low look from Toplyn, but a missed opportunity and the resulting foul allowed USciences to escape with a 73-70 edge.

Senior forward Will Gregorits (Burke, Va.) led five Devils in double digits with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. He also recorded three assists and a block. Senior guard Flo Da-Silva (Moorestown, N.J.) offered 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Junior forward Brendan Crawford (Haddonfield, N.J.) totaled 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Freshman guards, Brandon Starr (Glenn Mills, Pa.) and Paddy Casey (Scranton, Pa.) also finished in double figures, recording 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Toplyn's free throw shooting headlined Chestnut Hill College's 14-of-16 (.875) showing at the charity stripe. Evans hit three (3-of-5, .600), three point baskets in an 8-of-13 (.615) shooting performance and added a pair of free throws (2-of-2, 1.000) in his third 20-point effort of the season. Isaac added five rebounds and six assists to his 10 points. Awl finished with 11 points. Prior to today's contest Chestnut Hill College Athletics recognized Evans, Isaac, and senior forward Andrew Conboy (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) for their contributions to the Scarlet and Gold.

The Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team finishes the 2017-2018 season at 5-21 overall and 4-15 in the CACC.
