Julia Galantich (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) powered the Griffins to a 16-2 win in today's season opener at Chowan University. The Scarlet and Gold captain located sophomore midfielder
Spencer Fitzgerald (Huntingtown, Md.) for the first tally of the game at 28:32 and later inspired a Chestnut Hill College run that buried the Hawks behind an insurmountable 7-1 deficit. She set career-highs in points (11) and goals, scoring six tallies in addition to five assists and a ground ball.
Chowan University (2-4) answered the initial Chestnut Hill College (1-0) tally, 1-1 (25:15), but Galantich factored into six goals over the next 20 minutes, spurring the Griffins to an eventual 14-goal fortune. She scored the first of two unassisted tallies at 23:21 to give the Scarlet and Gold a 2-1 advantage, then added another at 19:56 (3-1), and assisted junior midfielder
Julia Reinert (Bridgeport, Pa.) at 17:43 (4-1), before scoring two more solo efforts (8:52, 6:43) and locating, fellow captain, senior midfielder
Erica McLaughlin (Magnolia, N.J.) for the first of her two goals at 5:19 (7-1). After that, Reinert completed a pass from sophomore midfielder
Haley Norwillo (Duryea, Pa.), 8-1 (3:56), for the first Griffin goal in a 3-1 run to halftime, 10-2. After intermission, two more Galantich goals (27:02, 24:15) led off a 6-0 Scarlet and Gold second-half that left the final margin at 14, 16-2.
Sophomore midfielder Alexandria Hammonds (San Diego, Calif.) scored both of the Hawks goals. She also recorded a ground ball, four ground controls, and two caused turnovers. Sophomore defender Tashana Barnett (Spotsylvania, Va.) helped with three ground balls, four draws, and a caused turnover, as did freshman Emily Bush (Birmingham, Ala.) who recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers, before making four saves in the final 35:19 of play.
Galantich's grandiose performance was complimented by a three-goal game from Reinert and multiple-point efforts from McLaughlin, Fitzgerald, Leckonby, and Norwillo. McLaughlin offered three ground balls, four draws, and three caused turnovers in excess of her three points (2 goals, 1 assist), Fitzgerald totaled three ground balls, a draw, and three caused turnovers in addition to her two goals. Valeria Amaya (Oakland, Calif.) earned the win (1-0) by making five saves and recovering a ground ball in the opening 47:04.
