Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/29/2018) – The 2018 Chestnut Hill College softball season came to conclusion with this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader versus Goldey-Beacom College. The Griffins won the opener, 5-2, scoring a pair of runs in their first at-bat and three more in their third. The Lightning got redemption in game two, with a three runs head start and a three-run fourth inning providing enough insurance to endure four Scarlet and Gold's scores in the bottom of the fourth, 6-4.
Juniors, left fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) (2-for-2) and shortstop
Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) (2-for-3) each recorded two hits and two runs in game one, but junior center fielder
Marissa Maioran (Rockaway, N.J.) and junior catcher
Kaya Swanek (Pittston, Pa.) were responsible for knocking in the five runs that earned freshman
Gabrielle Merryman (Sewell, N.J.) her first collegiate win. The first two Chestnut Hill College (6-27, 6-20) came across in the first inning, where Magee singled to centerfield with one out and stole second before scoring along with junior first baseman
Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.) on a Maioran single to right field, 2-0. The Griffins added three runs to their lead in the third inning. There, leadoff singles from Magee and Winn gave the Scarlet and Gold the fuel they needed to score on a Maioran fielder's choice, 3-0, and a Swanek single down the left field line, 5-0. Merryman (1-2) held the Lightning to two runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out four over 6.1 innings. Junior
Jessica Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) earned her first save of the season, securing the final two outs of the game with a pair of Lightning runners on base.
In game two, Goldey-Beacom College (6-31, 6-20) established a 6-0 lead before the Griffins were able to answer. In the bottom of the fourth inning, sophomore second baseman
Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.) led off with a single to left field, before a Lightning error and a Winn single scored the Chestnut Hill College's first run, 6-1. The ensuing fielder's choice off Sauer's bat prompted another error and allowed Magee to make her way home, 6-2. Swanek's sacrifice fly made it 6-3 and back-to-back, two-out singles from sophomore third baseman
Giovanna Lorine (Berwyn, Pa.) and freshman right fielder
Devon Horner (Mount Laurel, N.J.) pushed another Griffin run across, 6-4. Chestnut Hill College threatened again in the fifth inning, but a change of pitcher's quieted the rally and preserved the Lightning's 6-4 victory. Messina was 3-for-3 with a run, while junior
Nichole Eberhard (Philadelphia, Pa.) allowed two earned runs in six innings of relief.
The Chestnut Hill College softball team finishes the 2018 season at 6-27 overall and 6-20 in CACC play.
