Eagles Sweep Griffins in CACC Twin Bill

Lily Winn
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Waterbury, Conn. – (4/7/2018) – Post University served as Chestnut Hill College's host for this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Griffins scored first in game one, but a series of miscues allowed the Eagles to end the game in five innings, 10-2. In game two, poor fielding continued to plague the Scarlet and Gold, who fell behind early in an eventual 6-3 final. Junior third baseman Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) collected three hits (3-for-5) hits in the twin bill, while Griffin pitching staff allowed only three earned runs on 15 hits and five walks.

In the first their first at-bat of the afternoon, Chestnut Hill College (0-14, 0-7) put a pair of runs on the scoreboard. A leadoff walk to junior Marissa Maioran (Rockaway, N.J.), a single down the left field line from junior left fielder Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.), and a single to right field from junior first baseman Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.) plated the first, 1-0. The second was Magee, who crossed the plate on a double steal with Sauer, 2-0. Unfortunately, Post University (10-12, 8-2) used five hits and a pair of Griffin errors to retaliate with seven runs in the second inning, 7-2. From there, the Eagles added two runs in the third inning, 9-2, and a run in the fourth inning to end the game after the top of the fifth, 10-2. Winn (2-for-2) and Sauer (2-for-3) recorded two hits apiece, while junior Hunter Irvin (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) (0-3), junior Jessica Heaton (Berlin, N.J.), and freshman Gabrielle Merryman (Sewell, N.J.) combined to allow two earned runs on nine hits and two walks.

Post University established a sizeable advantage in the second inning of game two, plating five runs on four hits and three Griffin errors. The Eagles added a sixth run in the third inning, which was more than enough to outlast Chestnut Hill College in a 6-3 end. The Scarlet and Gold scored their first run in the fourth inning with Winn doubling home Sauer. The other two crossed in the sixth inning, when a one-out walk to Winn, a single from junior catcher Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.), a passed ball, a run-scoring ground out from sophomore shortstop Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.), and a run-scoring single from Heaton officially cut the Eagle lead in half. Junior Nicole Eberhard (Philadelphia, Pa.) (0-6) allowed one earned run on six hits and three walks.

The Chestnut Hill College softball team returns to the campus diamond on Monday, April 9, when they host Nyack College in a 2:30 p.m. CACC doubleheader.
