PREVIEW: Griffins Look to Get Back on Winning Track vs. Holy Family

The Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball will look to get back on the winning track as they host Holy Family University in the final game of their four game homestand Wednesday night.

The Series
Wednesday's contest will be the 29th meeting between these two teams.  The series dates back to the 2003-04 season and the Tigers have an 19-9 record in games with the Griffins.  The griffins have won the last three meetings between the two teams, including the game earlier this season when Chestnut Hill scored a 67-58 win at HFU's Campus Center.  At home the Griffins are 6-8 against the Tigers with their last win coming on December 18, 2019 (70-67).

Conference Action
Chestnut Hill dropped to 6-2 in Central Atlantic collegiate Conference games with 75-74 loss to Post University on Saturday. With the loss, the team is now in second place in the CACC South Division, behind Jefferson.  Holy Family is 2-8 in league games  and sit in sixth place in the division.

About the Griffins
The Griffins enter Wednesday's game with a 9-7 overall record and a 6-2 mark in CACC games.  They are in second place in the CACC south Division, one gamer behind league leading Jefferson University.

A trio of players are averaging double figures to lead the Griffins offense. Division I transfer Nigel Haughton is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 13.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.  The sophomore guard is shooting 49.7% from the field, including a 32.7% mark from three-point range.  He is second on the team with 18 three-point baskets.   Haughton also leads the team with 25 steals and 47 assists. 
 
Freshman MJ Iraldi is averaging 12.8 points per game while shooting 49.7% from the field. (36.4% from three-point range).  He is third on the team with 12 steals and is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game. Amir Warrick is the third Griffin scoring in double figures, averaging 11.7 points per game while shooting 46.8% from the field.  Warrick is third on the team with 28 assists and second on the team with 15 steals and 11 blocks. 
 
Trevonn Pitts is averaging 9.5 points per game and is tied for third on the team with 12 steals. Conor Regan is averaging 8.4 points per game, is tied for second on the team with 18 three-point field goals and third in rebounding (5.4/game) He leads the team in blocks with 12.
 
David Erebor is averaging 7.2 points per game and is shooting a team-best 52.3% from the field (9th in CACC).  Erebor is second on the team in rebounds, averaging 6.0 per game.  James Rider IV recently moved into a starting role and is now averaging 8.7 points per game. He is second in the league in three-point field goal%, shooting 46.2% from three-point range (24-52).  Noah Charles is second on the team in assists with 38 and has 12 steals while averaging 3.9 points per game. 

Last time Out
A last second shot by the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team fell short as the Griffins nearly came all the way back from a double-digit deficit in the second half before bowing to Post University 75-74 Saturday afternoon at the Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins put five players in double figures led by Amir Warrick and Nigel Haughton who scored 16 points apiece.  Trevonn Pitts added 14 points and MJ Iraldi came off the bench to score 11.  Iraldi also had a game-high 11 rebounds to complete the double-double.  James Rider IV added ten points to round out CHC's double figure scorers.

Trailing by as many as 18 in the second half, the Griffins slowly began to chip away at the eagles' lead as the half went on. Post still maintained a 15-point advantage midway through the half when the Griffins produced a 13-0 uprising to turn the game into a game of possessions.    Warrick started the run with a layup-and-one and two minutes later Iraldi converted his own traditional three-point play cut the lead to single digits 68-60.  Two free throws by Pitts, and another layup by Iraldi closed the gap even more and when Haughton sank two free throws with 5:54 left, it was a one-possession game with the Griffins trailing 68-66.  Twice in the final; three minutes the Griffins closed the gap to one with Warrick's jumper with 1:18 left making the score 75-74.  A missed one-and-one opportunity by the Eagles gave the Griffins one last chance with 11 seconds left but Warrick's short came up short as time expired.

It was all Eagles in the first half as they opened the game with an 11-3 run.  David Erebor's layup at the 10:43 mark pulled the Griffins within three 18-15, but a 9-1 run by Post pushed their lead to double digits 29-16. The Eagles outscored the Griffins 13-6 over the final six minutes to take a 16-point lead at the half 47-31.

Haughton Named to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll for Fourth Time This Season
Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball player Nigel Haughton  for the third consecutive week, has been named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll for his performance during the Griffins' three games last week.

It is Haughton's fourth time overall earning conference honor roll status, having also been recognized during the first week of the season.

Haughton averaged 14.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in leading the Griffins to a 2-1 record last week.

Opening the week against USciences, Haughton was not needed necessarily to score against the Devils so he contributed big in another way – grabbing a career high 16 rebounds in just 24 minutes of playing time.  Haughton also added an assist and a steal.

Against Jefferson two days later, Haughton's offense was essential to the Griffins 84-79 upset win, scoring a team-high 21 points (7-12 FG) while dishing out seven assists and grabbing six rebounds.

In the Griffins one-point loss to Post, Haughton had 16 points (7-10 FG) five assists and four rebounds.

For the week Haughton shot 58.6% from the field  (17-29) with 26 total rebounds, 13 assists  and two steals. Griffins.

First Win
Chestnut Hill Head Coach J.J. Butler earned his first win as a head coach on November 17 as his Griffins defeated Bloomsburg University 76-69.  Two newcomers MJ Iraldi and Nigel Haughton were the catalysts for the Griffins as was David Erebor on defense.  Iraldi and Haughton combined for 41 points while Erebor had four blocks and eight rebounds while also contributing 11 points.

Dynamic Duos
Twice this season, the Griffins had two players score 20 or more points in a single game when they played West Chester on November 21. Amir Warrick scored a team-high 23 points while Nigel Haughton added 22 against the Golden Rams. This marks the 15th time since the 2014-15 season that Chestnut Hill has had at least two players score 20 or more points in a single game.
Chestnut Hill also had two players scored 20 or more points in their win over Bloomsburg as MJ Iraldi led the team with 21 points and Nigel Haughton added 20.  
The last time this feat occurred prior to this season was on February 18, 2020 when three members of this year's squad, Amir Warrick (28 points), Trevonn Pitts (20), and James Rider IV (20) all reached the 20-point mark.

Scouting the Tigers
Holy Family University is 7-13 overall and 2-8 in CACC games, sitting in sixth place in the CACC South Division.
The Tigers have four players averaging double figures led by freshman Manny Toha.  Toha is averaging 12.0 points per game and leads the team with 33 steals.  Eric Esposito is averaging 11.9 points and leads the team in rebounding pulling down an average of 8.4 per game.  Espositio also leads the team in blocks with 27.
Daniel Fleming is the third double figure scorer for the Tigers, averaging 10.4 points per game.  Fleming is shooting 47.7% from the field and is third on the team averaging 5.3 rebounds per game.  His 20 blocks rank second on the Tiger squad.  Kharon Randolph rounds out the Tigers' double-figure scorers, posting a 10.1 points per game average.
Rick'Keem Mixson leads Holy Family with 54 assists and is second on the team averaging 5.4 rebuonds per game.  He is scoring 8.5 points per game.

Last Time Out for Holy Family
Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University men's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest to nationally ranked No. 13/19 Dominican College by the score of 69-52 on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
 
Freshman Manny Toha led the Tigers with 19 points, while junior Daniel Fleming finished with 18 points and six rebounds.  Eric Esposito totaled a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with four points, two blocks and a steal.
 
Dominican led majority of the game with the exception of the opening minute when the Tigers opened the game with a three-pointer.  With the game tied 7-7, five minutes in, the Chargers went on a 19-9 run to grab a double-digit lead.  A three-pointer by Jalen Burgess made the score 26-16 at the 9:17 mark. The Chargers led by as many as 15 points in the first half at 31-16 and took a 34-22 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
In the second half the Tigers chipped away at the Chargers' lead and cut the game to single digits (42-39) at the 11:15 mark after junior Daniel Fleming scored a basket off an offensive rebound. Holy Family cut the deficit down to as low as eight points on multiple occasions down the stretch but were never able to get a stop on defense. Each time the Chargers responded with a score on the other end to keep the Tigers at bay. 
 
With 4:48 remaining the Tigers made it a 55-47 game after a basket by junior Eric Esposito.  From there, the Chargers closed out the game on a 14-5 run.
