Spann Returns to CACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll

New Haven, Conn. - (1/21/2020) – Freshman guard Scottie Spann Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.) returned to this week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Basketball Honor Roll after averaging 20.5 points-per-game (PPG) and 8.0 rebounds-per-game (RPG) in losses to Wilmington University (L, 66-75 on January 15) and Caldwell University (L, 71-90 on January 19). Spann has been a consistent contributor during his freshman campaign, offering double-digit scoring 11 of 16 games. His best performance this past week included 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists, a block, and a steal versus the Cougars.

On Wednesday, January 15, a highly emotional CACC contest saw Chestnut Hill College (3-14, 3-5) hold Wilmington University (2-13, 2-5) to 21 points and a 23.3% (7-of-30) shooting performance in the first half, 31-21. But the Griffins only converted 17-of-30 (.567) free throws in a 75-66 loss to the Wildcats. Sophomore forward Keyon Butler (Chester, Pa.) captained the Scarlet and Gold in the first-half with seven points and eight rebounds, but a 27-point second half from senior guard Jermaine Head (Edgewood, Md.) fueled the Wildcat comeback. Four Griffins finished in double figures, including sophomore guard Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) and Spann who totaled 18 points apiece. Spann was 6-of-15 (.400) from the floor and additionally provided nine rebounds and a steal.

CACC play continued on Sunday, January 19, afternoon for Chestnut Hill College, who welcomed Caldwell University (9-7, 5-3) to Sorgenti Arena for a divisional cross over. The Griffins led for most of the opening half, but after a series of late Scarlet and Gold turnovers, the Cougars were able to snare a 43-40 at halftime edge. Chestnut Hill College stayed within three points, 69-66, of Caldwell University with 6:13 remaining in the contest. But a couple of untimely misses let the Cougars loose as they closed the affair on a 22-5 run; 90-71. Spann scored four (4-of-10, .400) of his baskets (7-of-17, .412) from long range. He was also 5-of-8 (.625) from the free throw line.
