Owen and Maurer Recognized By ECC after Drubbing of Dowling College

Central Islip, N.Y. – (5/1/2013) – For their performance in an 18-8 defeat of (RV) Dowling College on Saturday, April 27, senior attack Craig Owen (Glenolden, Pa.) and senior goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, Pa.) were recognized on the East Coast Conference (ECC) Week 10 Report. Owen earned a share of the league’s Player of the Week title while Maurer earned his fourth mention on the ECC Weekly Honor Roll.

Impressing one and all in the final home contest of their collegiate careers, Chestnut Hill College (7-5, 4-2) seniors fueled an unstoppable offense that defeated ECC rival and defending National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II National Champion, Dowling College 18-8. Once the first net popped, the Griffins were on the move, netting the affair's first three goals before Dowling College (7-4, 3-3) looked to slow the run with the contest’s next two scores, 3-2 (4:55 and 3:33). But that is as close as the Golden Lions would get with Owen scoring his first goal as the last of the first quarter, 5-2 (0:07), before finishing two passes from freshman Tanner Fisher (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) to start the second quarter (13:06 and 12:52), 7-2. By halftime the deficit reached six, 10-4, by the end of the third quarter it was nine, 14-5, and despite the Golden Lions scoring three of the game's last four goals, the Griffins still won by a ten-goal margin, 18-8.

The Golden Lions had no answer for Owen, who recorded five goals, an assist, and a ground ball in the win. While playing a majority of the minutes (56:13), Maurer made stop after stop to total 11 saves and a ground ball in the winning effort (7-5). Owen is currently tied with junior attack Michael Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) for the team lead in scoring (25 goals), while ranking second to Melnychenko in assists (15) and points (40). He has also recorded 11 ground balls and caused a turnover. With a 7-5 record, Maurer ranks second in the ECC for saves (144), eighth in the NCAA DII, fourth in save percentage (.576), 12th in NCAA DII, and sixth in goal-against-average (9.49 GAA), 17th in the NCAA DII.

The men's lacrosse team will conclude their ECC and 2013 scheduled with next week's contest, a 1:00 p.m. game at #5 Long Island University (LIU) Post on Saturday, May 4.
