Griffin Trio Returns From Spring Break With CACC Honors

New Haven, Conn. - (3/2/2015) – Despite some rainy weather, the Spring Break trip to Florida provided an opportunity for several members of the Chestnut Hill College softball team to shine. Three Griffins were particularly impressive in a 2-4 trip to Space Coast Spring Training, earning recognition on the season’s first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Report. Sophomore Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) was named Pitcher of the Week, freshman infielder Jaden Perrillo (Shickshinny, Pa.) was honored as the Rookie of the Week after belting two home runs in her second collegiate contest, and junior catcher Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) garnered an Honor Roll mention for leading the Griffins in batting average (.467, 7-for-15) and RBI (4) down South.

The season-opening twin bill against Cleary University on Tuesday, February 24 acted as a coming out party for Perrillo, who blasted home runs in each of her first two at-bats during the second contest to become just the second player in program history to offer a multi-home run game. Cedrone went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the 5-3 Griffin triumph, just hours after a 3-for-4, 3-RBI outburst in a season-opening 6-2 victory. Her two-run single opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning, and another run-scoring base knock provided a 3-1 advantage in the seventh. Holloway made sure the lead held up, allowing just two hits and one earned run with a career-best 12 strikeouts in a complete-game gem.

The Griffins southern sojourn continued with a pair of losses to Florida Institute of Technology by respective scores of 5-3 and 7-0. Perrillo went 1-for-2 with a run scored and Cedrone had an RBI in the opener, and Cedrone was all that stood between Chestnut Hill College and a perfect game in the nightcap, providing the Griffins lone hit.

After splitting their first day of competition at Space Coast Spring Training, the Chestnut Hill College softball team had trouble getting a run across in a pair of shutout defeats, 8-0 and 10-0 (5) at Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBAU) on Wednesday, February 25. Juniors, Cedrone and first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.) each singled in the first contest while their classmate, left fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) broke up a no-hitter in the second game with a first-inning single to second base.

Cedrone gave Chestnut Hill College (2-4) their first baserunner with two outs in the bottom top of the first inning, but the following pop out to short ended the early opportunity. Unfortunately, baserunners would be hard to come by as the PBAU (9-9) pitching staff allowed only three Griffin hits in the twin bill. The Griffins second hit of the opener came on a fifth-inning single from Williams, who stole second but never made it any further with a pop out and two strike outs leaving her stranded.

Chestnut Hill College returns to Philadelphia for its home opener, a non-conference doubleheader with Philadelphia University on Saturday, March 7.
