Martines’ 3,000-meter at Blue Hen Classic Collects CACC Weekly Track Awards

New Haven, Conn. – (4/28/2015) – Freshman Giancarlo Martines (Cherry, N.J.) earned ten of the Chestnut Hill College men’s outdoor track and field team’s 94 points with a 1st place (8:46.51) finish in the men’s 3,000-meter run. His performance garnered him his second appearance on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Track and Field Weekly Report as he was simultaneously honored as the league’s Track Athlete and Rookie of the Week.

The men’s trophy went to Villanova University (141 points,) but Martines’ big run came at the end of the day as the men’s 3,000-meter served as the University of Delaware Classic’s concluding event. It would be a climatic end for the Griffins who earned a spot in the team standings, 3rd of 9, for just the third time this season. The Griffins also earned five points in the shot put thanks to the rewarding tosses of freshman Ukunoritse Eyeguokan (Owings Mills, Md.) (6th, 10.21, 3 points) and senior Michael Humes (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) (7th, 9.26, 2 points). Freshman Ediegeo Vanterpool (Clementon, N.J.) earned four more points with his 5th place (4.97) finish in the men’s long jump while Eyeguokan added two points in the men’s 100-meter dash (7th, 12.43) and four points in the men’s 200-meter dash (5th, 25.15). In between, junior Noel Hightower (Easton, Pa.) earned five points with his 4th place (16.01) time in the men’s 110-meter hurdle. There were 14 points scored in the men’s 400-meter dash with junior Manon Purnell (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Vanterpool placing 2nd (54.92, 8 points) and 3rd (55.03, 6 points), respectively, 11 points in the men’s 400-meter hurdle run that saw Hightower run 3rd (59.02, 6 points) and Purnell right behind him in 4th (1:01.34, 5 points), and eight points in the men’s 1,500-meter run with a 2nd place (5:07.11) effort. Sophomore Eric Barton (Colora, Md.) and junior Daniel Repsik (Haddonfield, N.J.) joined Martines in scoring of the men’s 3,000-meter run, placing third (9:29.19, 6 points) and 4th (9:59.48, 5 points), respectively. Eyeguokan and sophomore Vraja Podlofsky (Port Royal, Pa.) also represented the Griffins in the final standings of the javelin throw, tossing the needle 27.36 (11th) and 25.03 (12th) meters, respectively.

The men’s and women’s track teams conclude their season with the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championships, which are scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, at Georgian Court University.
