Shaffer and Dietz Draw CACC Baseball Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. – (4/8/2019) – Sophomore first baseman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) made a seven-inning start in a 7-6 win over the University of the Sciences (USciences) on Saturday, April 6, and batted .520 (13-for-25) with nine runs, six runs-batted-in (RBI), and three stolen bases (3-for-4, .750) to earn on spot on this week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Honor Roll. Junior Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.) joined him there with a brilliant one-hit, complete game victory (W, 4-1) in the second game of the same twin bill with the Devils.

With 20 strikeouts between sophomores Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) and Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) and variety of contributions from the lineup, Chestnut Hill College enjoyed a pair of CACC victories – 14-5 and 7-3 – over USciences on Wednesday, April 3. Bethel dominated the Devils in game one, scattering five hits over seven innings while totaling a career-high 10 strike outs. A four-run fourth inning provided Hughes with all the support he would need as a single from senior designated hitter Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.), a two-run triple from junior third baseman Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.), and an error by the USciences shortstop gave the Griffins a commanding 6-3 advantage. Dietz was 3-for-9 with three runs and three RBI.

Chestnut Hill College completed their four-game sweep of USciences with Saturday’s league victories. The Griffins recorded their fourth walk off win of the season in the opener, capturing a 7-6 triumph with a pair of run-scoring singles from senior first baseman Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) and junior pinch hitter Dutch Reardon (Lafayette Hill, Pa.). Dietz recorded three hits (3-for-5), a run, and three RBI, while recording no decision in his seven-inning start. He gave up three runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six. Shaffer (1-1) dominated game two, striking out nine Devils and only allowing an unearned run in a one-hit victory, 4-1. A pair of second-inning infield singles from Dietz and Reardon scored the Griffins’ first run of the game. They scored two more runs in the fourth inning with a series of walks, 3-0, and a sixth-inning sacrifice fly from sophomore left fielder Michael Perugini (Tamarac, Fla.), 4-1. Dietz finished the contest 2-for-3 with a pair of runs.

Chestnut Hill College increased their current CACC winning streak to seven games with Sunday's 10-2 and 10-3 victories at Concordia College (NY); the Griffins scored nine late runs to win the opener and used a three-run home run from Small to prevail in game two. Gilham was 3-for-5 with two RBI in the opener, meanwhile Dietz (3-for-4) doubled in the second inning, singled in the fourth inning, and doubled in the seventh inning to contribute to three of the Griffins' 10 game-two runs. Dietz also went 2-for-4 with a run in game one.
