Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/12/2012) – Chestnut Hill College played host to West Chester University for a doubleheader of tennis today. The Griffin women were the first to claim victory over the Golden Rams with a 9-0 triumph; the men were not far behind as they completed the sweep with a 7-2 win.
In the women's match Chestnut Hill College (9-2) a Griffin sweep in doubles play set the tone for the afternoon. Seniors,
Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Belarus, Minsk) and
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) led-off the Griffins doubles lineup at number one doubles with an 8-3 win over top West Chester University (4-2) duo. At number two doubles, junior
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) were victorious 8-1 while the freshmen combo of
Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) and
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) teamed for a 8-5 win at number three doubles. The Griffins swept singles play as well with Shcherbakova taking the top individual flight 6-1, 6-1. Dennis won number two singles 6-1, 6-0. Parapouras was the victor at number three doubles 6-1, 6-1. Oechsle claimed number four singles 6-2, 6-1 and Williams-Mulesa earned the Griffins a point at number five singles in shutout fashion 6-0, 6-0. At number six singles, Owens put the finishing touches on the shutout with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
On the men's side, Chestnut Hill College (3-1) carried a narrow 2-1 lead after doubles action. The Griffins separated from the West Chester University (0-3) in singles play, claiming their only victory at number three doubles by default. Sophomore
Michael Humes (Medford, N.J.) took the matchup of number ones with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Junior
Yoann Pham (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) pulled out a 6-3, 7-5 win at number two singles just as freshman
Kevin Taylor took number six singles by the reverse score 7-5, 6-3. The Griffins earned their last points at number four and number five singles with wins from junior
Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) and sophomore
Steven Say (Cannes, France). Ceniceros took number four singles 6-2, 6-3 while Say secured number five singles 6-3, 6-4.
The Chestnut Hill College tennis teams play again tomorrow, Saturday, October 13, in another home doubleheader, as they welcome Adelphi University to campus for a 12:00 p.m. match.
