Tampa, Fla. – (3/5/2014) – Spring tennis continued today at the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT), where the Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis teams lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Panthers. The Griffin men lost 8-1 and the women, 7-2. Freshman
Mariano Porter (Cuemacava, Mexico) won the top men's singles flight 1-6, 6-1, 7-5, while the Griffin women won two doubles points before giving way to the Panthers in singles play.
On the women's side, #45 Chestnut Hill College (13-5) secured a 2-1 advantage with wins at number two doubles and number three doubles. Senior
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) took the second team flight 8-5 while sophomore
Hayley Craskey (Aston, Pa.) and junior
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburgri, Pa.) secured number three doubles a little later with a 9-8 triumph. FIT (3-7) took the top doubles match 8-2 and came back from the Griffins doubles advantage with six straight singles wins.
After a highly-competitive round of doubles, Porter was the only Griffin to get on the scoreboard in the men's match. Senior
Yoann Pham (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) also played well for Chestnut Hill College (5-3), but not enough to earn the win in a 7-6, 7-6 final at number two singles. Freshman
Pedro Oranges (Sao Paulo, Brazil) gave a strong effort as well, dropping number six singles 7-5, 6-4.
The men's and women's tennis teams conclude their time in the warm weather tomorrow, Thursday, March 6, with an 11:00 a.m. match at the Tampa Tennis Center against Wayne State University.
