Sanders Is Third Griffin to Win CACC’s Weekly Rookie Award

New Haven, Conn. - (4/8/2014) – Freshman midfielder Lea Sanders (North Merrick, N.Y.) became the third Griffin to earn the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week award after totaling nine goals, an assist, eight ground balls, nine draws, and five caused turnovers in Chestnut Hill College’s league victories over Caldwell College and Nyack College.

Fueled by Sanders, Chestnut Hill College (2-9, 2-3) used a 9-2 halftime advantage to secure their first victory of the season in CACC fashion; 16-6 over Caldwell College (0-5, 0-5). Sanders struck first, unassisted, just 28 seconds after the opening draw, 1-0 at 29:32, and again on a free position shot at 27:36, 2-0, before senior defender KarlaAne Klouda (Belvidere, N.J.) added a third consecutive score the Griffins, 3-0 at 18:07. After scoring the Griffins first two goals, Sanders added four more to total six tallies while providing an assist, four ground balls, four draws, and two caused turnovers in the Griffins ten-goal win.

Sanders scored the first goal of the game against Nyack College (1-10, 0-7) as well, 1-0 at 27:08. Her second goal made it 4-0 at 22:18 and by halftime the Griffins led 10-1. The second half was a different story, as sophomore midfielder Lauren Lebo (West Simsbury, Conn.) guided the Warriors back into the fray. She scored seven times, bringing the visitors within four goals, 15-11, in the final minutes of play (1:34). Fortunately, junior midfielder Mary Markowski (Parkton, Md.) added the contest’s last goal, 16-11, her second, just 19 seconds later (1:15).

Sanders currently ranks third on the team in points (24) with 22 goals and two assists. She also recovered 27 draws while leading the Griffins in ground balls (31) and caused turnovers (14).
