Donnelly and Darnulc’s Defense Draws ECC Weekly Accolades

Central Islip, N.Y. - (3/24/2014) – Leading Chestnut Hill College to a 6-5 overtime East Coast Conference (ECC) victory at Mercy College on Sunday, March 23, sophomore defenseman Derick Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) and senior Joseph Donnelly (Newtown Square, Pa.) were honored on this week’s ECC Men’s Lacrosse Report. Holding the league’s top scorer to an assist while recovering a ground ball, Darnulc earned Honor Roll status while Donnelly drew the league’s Goalkeeper of the Week title with 13 saves and three ground balls.

Chestnut Hill College (3-3, 2-1) staked Mercy College (6-3, 0-3) a 3-0 lead before penalties began to stack up for the home team. In the second quarter things went the Griffins way with senior midfielder Mark Winkelspecht (Laurys Station, Pa.) directing the man-up unit for two tallies and Landau scoring an unassisted goal at 5:29 to even the spread at 3-3 for halftime. Sophomore attack Tanner Fisher (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and junior midfielder Christopher Mertens (Freeport, N.Y.) extended the run into the second half with unassisted goals giving the Griffins a 5-3 advantage. But this time it was the Mavericks who answered back, scoring with a man-up score at 9:52, 5-4, and tying the game midway through the final minute of regulation (0:32), 5-5. In overtime, a crucial faceoff victory from freshman midfielder Nicholas Capone (Rochester, N.Y.) put the ball in the Griffins grasp. They pressured for a Maverick penalty and strategically used a timeout for freshman attack Alec Dambach (Howell, N.J.) to locate senior midfielder Michael Landau (Lancaster, Pa.) just before the two-minute mark (2:06) of the extra frame.

The men’s lacrosse team plays their next ECC contest at home on Saturday, March 29, when LIU Post comes to Victory Field #1 for a 4:00 p.m. opening faceoff.
