CACC Recognizes Latchum with
Player of the Week Honorable Mention
 
New Haven, CT – (3/22/2011) – While adapting to his new lead-off role, junior Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) garnered an honorable mention for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week award with his recent play. The Griffins left fielder batted .364 (4-for-11) and recorded two runs-batted-in (RBI) last week; including the game-winner in a 13-inning, non-conference, marathon against University of the Sciences (USciences) on Tuesday, March 15.
 
Latchum’s only hit against the USciences came in the clutch, scoring the winning run of a 3-2, 13-inning affair. The runs came early on errors from both sides, but after ten innings of scoreless baseball Chestnut Hill College (5-10, 1-1) finally wore through the Devils pitching staff. Sophomore catcher Timothy DiMonte (Downingtown, PA) was beamed to lead-off the Griffins half of the 13th inning and the winning run was moved to second base with a steal from pinch runner, freshman Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, PA). Following an intentional walk, the Griffins had two aboard. The Devils then changed pitchers, but Lites beat the ball to third base on sacrifice bunt from senior designated hitter Andrew Koziol (Wilmington, DE) to provide Latchum with a golden opportunity. He lined the 3-2 offering to right field to plate the winning run. He was 3-for-6 (.500) in the doubleheader against Bloomfield College on Saturday, March 19; scoring twice, and stealing four bases.
 
For the season, Latchum leads the Griffins in walks (11) and on-base percentage (.421), while carrying a .250 (11-for-44) batting average, scoring ten runs, and stealing eight bases (8-of-10).  
 
The baseball team breaks from CACC competition to visit West Chester University for a 3:00 p.m. contest on Tuesday, March 22.
