Toplyn Blocks Way to CACC Defensive Player of the Week Award, Isaac Assumes Fifth Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. - (2/12/2018) – Junior forward Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.) turned away eight shots while averaging 8.0 points-per-game (PPG) and 6.5 rebounds-per-game (RPG) in a 1-1 week of league play to earn the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week award. Toplyn is the first member of the Chestnut Hill College men’s basketball team to earn a major weekly award this season. His teammate, senior guard Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) made his fifth CACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll appearance after averaging a team-high 24.0 PPG and 4.5 RPG in contests versus Georgian Court University (W, 88-68 on 2/7) and Caldwell University (L, 62-72 on 2/10).

Chestnut Hill College claimed their third victory of the season - and their second by 20 points over a CACC opponent – on Wednesday, January 27 as a solid 26-point effort from Isaac and complimentary performances from Toplyn and junior guard Cartier Talford (Reading, Pa.) propelled the Scarlet and Gold to an 88-68 league win over Georgian Court University. The Griffins shot well at home, connecting on 32-of-58 (.581) from the floor and 13-of-25 (.520) from three. Isaac was 9-of-14 (.643) from the floor, 3-of-4 (.750) from three, and 5-of-5 (1.000) from the free throw line in his eighth game of 20 points or more this season. Toplyn totaled 10 points, six rebounds, an assist, and four blocks, anchoring a Griffin defense that forced 19 turnovers and rendered the Lions ineffective from three (4-of-20, .200) in a 26-of-63 (.413 FG%) shooting performance.

Caldwell University joined Chestnut Hill College for Saturday’s (February 10) rough and tumble CACC contest. The Cougars narrowly paced the Griffins through the disjointed opening 20 minutes, 30-24, and despite the best efforts Isaac and the Scarlet and Gold defense, they left Sorgenti Arena with a 72-62 CACC score. Isaac scored 18 of his team-high 22 points in the second half, finding his shot (6-of-8, .750) and making use of all six of his free throws (6-of-6, 1.000) in the process. He added three rebounds, two assists, and a steal to his 7-of-11 (.636) shooting performance and his perfect 8-of-8 (1.000) free throw showing. Toplyn captained the Scarlet and Gold defense with seven rebounds – five defensively - and four blocks. He also scored six points.

Toplyn currently ranks third in the CACC for blocks-per-game (1.8) and field goal percentage (.585, 79-of-135). Meanwhile, Isaac ranks ninth in shooting (.493, 136-of-276) with the league top free throw rate (.860, 111-of-129) and fourth best point production (18.1 PPG).

The Chestnut Hill College men’s basketball team continues their CACC schedule on Tuesday, February 13, when they visit Wilmington University for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
