Chestnut Hill College Athletics

New Haven, CT – (3/28/2011) – Senior Mario Gutierrez (Malaga, Spain) was 2-1 at number one singles and 1-2 at number two doubles to help lead Chestnut Hill College in last week’s competitions. For his efforts, he was recognized with an honorable mention for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week award. Junior Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) earned an honorable mention for the week ending March 20.

 

Chestnut Hill College (6-9, 1-1) earned a conference win over Post University on Saturday, March 26. Gutierrez set the tone in top singles match, defeating senior Caio Rodriguez (Suzano, Sao Paulo, Brazil) 6-0, 6-1. Gutierrez earned his first individual win of the week a day earlier, Friday, March 25, defeating junior Moras Preetham (Tumkur, India) of Millersville University 6-3, 6-2 in a 5-4 loss. He opened the week in competition with the nation’s #14 singles player, senior Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) of Concordia College (NY). Boldarev scored a 6-3, 6-1 win in the number one singles match. In doubles play, he teamed with freshman Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) to shut the Eagles out at number two doubles, 8-0.

 

Gutierrez is 8-7 at number one singles this season. He has played in both number one and number two doubles matches, most recently going 2-3 at number two doubles.

 

The men’s tennis team breaks from their CACC schedule to host La Salle University in their next match; a 3:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday, March 29.
